(Athens, Ohio USA) Stirling Ultracold, an Ohio-based manufacturer of ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers used in biomedical research, has recently signed a Master Supply Agreement with Case Western Reserve University.
Case Western Reserve is offering a $3,000 rebate for each Stirling Ultracold SU780UE ULT freezer purchased by research labs at the university. This rebate is supported by reductions in campus electric utility expenditures that are expected as older freezers are replaced with energy-efficient Stirling Ultracold models. As part of the university’s Climate Action Plan, this new program will also help research operations support the goal of creating a more carbon-neutral campus.
Both Case Western Reserve and Stirling Ultracold share a commitment to sustainability. In addition to using less than half the energy of traditional, compressor-based ULT models, Stirling ULT freezers use 100 percent natural refrigerants that have dramatically less negative atmospheric impact than comparable models using HFCs. With over 350 research labs and 300 freezers, CWRU’s adoption of Stirling’s technology could result in a significant reduction of overall energy consumption and associated carbon footprint across the entire campus.
“This is another example of how we use the latest in technology to help us achieve our sustainability goals,” says Stephen Campbell, vice president for Campus Planning and Facilities Management and Sustainability Advisory Committee Member at Case Western Reserve. “We are making investments in the physical plant to reduce our carbon footprint by using more efficient equipment and systems. The university’s Climate Action Plan has already resulted in reduced overall demand for energy and increased use of wind and solar power as clean energy sources.”
Stirling Ultracold has shown a commitment to investing in Ohio’s growth and sustainability. Manufacturing its products in a historically underserved region of Appalachia, Stirling operates a Zero Waste facility and encourages the research community to reduce environmental impact through its technology and by example.
“We are proud to be a part of Case Western Reserve University’s efforts to create an energy efficient campus,” commented Neill Lane, CEO of Stirling Ultracold. “The rebate CWRU is offering to its labs demonstrates a genuine commitment to environmental sustainability.”
