S-Lab, a global sustainability initiative based at the Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom, has named the Stirling Ultracold Model SU780U ultra-low freezer to its shortlist for a worldwide competition created to encourage good practice in laboratory design, operation and management.
The award winners will be announced at Kings College, London, UK on September 2-3, 2014, where the S-Lab 2014 Conference will be held in partnership with the Institute of Science and Technology (IST).
According to Peter James, Director of the S-Lab program, the 2014 Awards shortlist shows that laboratory design, management and operation are changing in response to new knowledge and technologies, competitive, financial and other pressures, and user expectations. The result is better research and teaching, more cost efficient operation which can create more resource for actual science with reduced environmental impact.
S-Lab was established to create more effective laboratories arising from financial, customer, user, regulatory and other pressures. S-Lab has been mainly funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Scottish Funding Council (SFC).S-Lab outputs include assessment tools, benchmarking, best practice dissemination, networking and other activities.

Stirling Ultracold ultra-low freezers and free-piston Stirling engines are manufactured in the United States at Global Cooling’sAthens, Ohio facility. Earlier, the Stirling Ultracold Model SU780U freezer was named the 2013 Product of the Year by theInternational Society of Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) at their annual meeting in Sydney, Australia.
